  • Description

The first anniversary of the declaration of martial law in the Philippines was celebrated at a ceremony at Luneta Park Manila. A huge national flag was hoisted with the assistance of civic leaders and representatives of youth, trade unions, farmers and minority groups. Wreaths were laid after a dedication ceremony at the foot of the monument to the national hero, Jose Rizal, martyred in the struggle for liberation from Spain. After the wreath laying speeches were made by various leaders including the chief of chaplains of the Philippine armed forces, followed by prayers from two Muslim priests from the southern part of the country. President Marcos later told the nation in a television address that the imposition of martial law had averted anarchy and promoted prosperity.
