Background: INTRODUCTION: On the Third Anniversary of the Islamic Summit conference, Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto of Pakistan inaugurated the Minar, a modern architect-designed structure built to commemorate brotherhood among Muslims. The inauguration took place on Tuesday(22 February).

SYNOPSIS: The Minar stands in Faisal Square, dedicated to the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who contributed greatly to the revival of Muslim power. The foundation stone of the monument was laid by Mr. Bhutto two years ago on the First Anniversary of the Conference.

During the past five years Pakistan has strengthened its relations both politically and economically with Muslim countries. In 1971 only 12 per cent of Pakistan's trade was with the Islamic world, now one-third of its exports are directed to them.

Several Muslim countries are now participating in joint development and commercial projects in Pakistan. This magnificent monument represents Pakistan's growing affinity with the Muslim world. The building itself took 20 months to complete. Four huge halls were especially designed for displaying important documents of the Conference.

In addition there is a special audio-visual room. One of the halls will serve as listening and watching area and the other as a small auditorium. A museum will also be provided a the site.
