  • Description

Wing of DC-8 Super 63, newest member of Douglas Aircraft Company's family of commercial jetliners, is joined to fuselage at firm's Aircraft Division, Long Beach, Calif. The long-range, extended fuselage DC-8 Super 63 is one of three Super Sixty Series DC-8s designed to meet the rapidly growing boom in air traffic. The four-engined Super 63 has a fuselage 187 feet long, matching that of the DC-8 Super 61, and also has nearly the extreme range of the DC-8 Super 62, tailored for intercontinental routes. The Super 63, scheduled for flight test next year, will carry up to 251 passengers in all-tourist configuration, same as the Super 61, world's largest commercial jetliner flying. Range of the Super 63 is over 4450 statute miles with a full passenger payload. Both the Super 61 and Super 62 are undergoing flight testing prior to certification and the start of deliveries. Orders for all three versions of the Super Sixty Series total 141. Of those, 33 are for the Super 63. Airlines ordering the new jet include Canadian Pacific, Capitol, Flying Tigers, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch, Scandinavian (SAS) and Seaboard World.
