  • Description

Violence broke out among hundreds of students on the campus of the University of Queensland and last Friday (September 4th) after a South Vietnamese diplomat had addressed them. All available police were rushed to the campus and a pitched battle broke out between students and police.

The trouble began when the diplomat, Lu Tuong Quang, refused to answer students' questions and students blocked his way out of a university building. Other students moved in to protect the diplomat and fighting broke out.

Police were rused to the university to protect Mr. Lu but students surrounded the police vehicles and refused to let them leave the campus.

All available police were then called in and Police Commissioner Ray Whitrod told them to use any force necessary. Police finally cleared a path for police vehicles and Mr Lu to leave the campus.

One policeman was taken to hospital with injured ribs but there were no arrests.

Yesterday (Monday Sept 7th) the Australian Army Minister, Mr. Peacock, announced that troops would be stationed on the campus until September the 18th to prevent student plans to occupy the administrative block.
