  • Description

In a major combined operation, United States Marines and South Vietnamese troops sealed off a large section of Da Nang in an intensive search for Viet Cong suspects over the week-end. The search ended with fourteen suspects arrested.

The operation started in the early hours of the morning. While American marines cordoned off the area, the South Vietnamese troops started their house-to-house search.

Intelligence sources had pinpointed the district as a Viet Cong staging area. Recent rocket attacks on the nearby Da Nang air base were thought to have been launched from this section of the city.

The soldiers searched about 600 homes, checking the identity papers of the occupants. Most of the people living there accepted the search philosophically--there have been periodic checks of the same area in the past.

People without proper identity papers--there were about 2,000 of them--were taken to a central intelligence point for further questioning.

Two women were arrested for possessing explosives, and a dozen men were held as suspected army deserters.
