  • Description

THIRTY-FIVE PROMINENT GREEKS -- INCLUDING UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS, LAWYERS AND A RETIRED ARMY GENERAL -- APPEARED BEFORE A COURT MARTIAL IN ATHENS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH) TO FACE CHARGES OF PLOTTING TO OVERTHROW THE REGIME -- AN OFFENCE WHICH CARRIES A POSSIBLE DEATH PENALTY.

ONLY A SMALL AUDIENCE WAS ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE FIRST DAY OF THE TRIAL BECAUSE OF LACK OF SPACE AND STRICT SECURITY MEASURES. THE TRIAL IS SEEN AS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVER HELD IN GREECE SINCE THE ARMY SEIZED POWER IN APRIL, 1967.

MOST OF THE DEFENDANTS BELONG TO THE ELITE OF THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT AND THEIR STATUS AS INTELLECTUALS AMONG ATHENIANS IS REPORTEDLY EXPECTED TO STIR UP INTEREST AMONG GREEK PUBLIC OPINION, RESULTING IN A DIFFICULT CASE FOR THE PROSECUTION.

IN EVIDENCE HEARD YESTERDAY, GEORGE MAGHAKIS, AGED 48, PROFESSOR OF PENAL LAW AT ATHENS UNIVERSITY, TOLD THE COURT MARTIAL THAT HE HAD BEEN TORTURED BY SECURITY POLICE WHILE UNDER INTERROGATION. THE HEARING IS CONTINUING.
