  • Description

A delegation from the Rumanian Communist Party arrived in Damascus on Thursday (8 January) for a four-day official visit. The delegation was led by Mr. Andre Stefan, the Rumanian Secretary and Head of foreign Relations.

The talks the delegation were to have with leaders of the Syrian Government were expected to cover the forthcoming United Nations Security Council debate on the Middle East, as well as the development of relations between the two countries.

Shortly after their arrival the Rumanians had a meeting with the Syrian Prime Minister, Mr. Mahmoud Al-Ayoubi, and the Assistant Secretary General of the Bath Arab Socialist Party, Mr. Abadallah Al-Ahmar.

The talks were part of Syria's diplomatic offensive to marshall support at the Security Council debate, due to start on Monday, 12 January. There are indications that Syria will try during the debate to introduce amendments to the Council's resolutions on the Middle East - particularly resolutions 242 and 338. It is also believed that Syria will try to obtain a new resolution "summing up" all the former resolutions.
