Background: President Ceausescu of Rumania - the only Communist country to have diplomatic relations with Israel - arrived in Cairo on Sunday (April 2) at the start of a five-day official visit to Egypt.
He was accompanied by President Sadat and top-ranking Egyptian Government officials.
The two leaders later discussed the Middle East situation and relations between their won countries.
On the first day of the visit the two Presidents went to the Nasser mausoleum, and a short meeting at the Kubbah Presidential Palace.
Later in the visit the Rumanian President is scheduled to visit Alexandria and other places of archaeological interest. Egypt is the last country visited by President Ceausescu in a month-long tour of Africa.
SYNOPSIS: President Nicolae Ceausescu of Rumania arrived in Cairo on Sunday - the start of a five-day official visit to Egypt.
President Anwar Sadat and his wife were at the airport to greet the Rumanian leader, who was accompanied by his wife and a party of fifty people - among them some Government ministers...relations between Rumania and Egypt went through a lukewarm phase after the 1967 Middle East war, when Rumania kept up diplomatic links with Israel.
When Rumania raised her diplomatic representation in Israel to Embassy level, Egypt recalled her Ambassador to Bucharest. The Egyptian Ambassador went back to Bucharest only last January; Rumania had kept her Ambassador in Cairo without any interruption.
President Ceausescu and President Sadat were to hold talks on the Middle East, and relations between their two countries. According to one Arab newspaper the Rumanian leader was also expected to confer with the Palestinian guerrilla leader, Yasser Arafat....
Before going to the Kubbah Presidential Palace for their first preliminary talks the two Presidents visited the Nasser mausoleum.
They paused in silence beside the grave of the former Egyptian leader.....
Then on to the Kubbah Presidential Palace where President Ceausescu will stay during his five days in Egypt. The two Presidents and their ministers held their first talks at the Palace on Sunday. Further discussions were scheduled for later in the visit. The Rumanian head of State also planned to visit Alexandria and other centres of ???
