  • Description

Before setting out on a three-day inspection tour of central Greece, President Phaedon Gizikis attended a Cathedral service in Athens today (Sunday, March 3) with other leaders of the Greek government. The service was to mark Orthodoxy Day -- aimed at the unity of all followers of the Orthodox Church.

Also among the worshippers was Prime Minister Adamandios Androutsopoulos, who a month ago had a narrow escape when a stairway collapsed while he was visiting an Athens church. Three other ministers in his government were injured -- two of them badly -- in the accident. But the Prime Minister had stepped off the temporary stairway just before it collapsed, and he escaped injury.

Today's service was conducted by the newly elected Archbishop of Greece, Mgr. Serafeim. All the Bishops of the Holy Synod were also present.
