  • Description

Following claims by Syrian security authorities to have smashed a series of Communist underground groups, an 18-year old girl, one of several teen-ages arrested during police swoops, appeared at a Damascus press conference December 27 and told of her activities for the Communist Party during the past four months.

The girl, Firdaus Bahra, denied Communist newspaper reports that she had been tortured since her arrest, and said the Communist Party in Syria - Northern Region of the United Arab Republic - had tried, following it's collapse, to re-organise by recruiting young boys and girls.

Communist policy, she said, aimed at breaking the Syria-Egypt union, and discrediting the Agrarian Reform Law.

Her role in the Communist scheme, she said, was to train eighteen girls in subversive activities, and to co operate with a counterpart in the Lebanese Communist Party. She said she was sure that her group was the last active Communist organisation in the Syrian region.
