  • Description

Addressing the Sri Lanka State Assembly on the first day of a four-day official visit, Pakistan's Prime Minister Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto called on foreign powers not to interfere in Bangladesh.

He did not mention any country by name, but observers in Colombo say that he was apparently referring to India. The Indian Government has expressed serious concern at events in Bangladesh since the August military coup in which President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and members of his family were killed.

Mr. Bhutto and his wife, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, arrived in Colombo on Tuesday (16 December) and were greeted at the airport by the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

On the second day of his visit Mr. Bhutto and Mrs. Bandaranaike conferred for more than two hours and a Pakistani spokesman said that their talks were concentrated on the situation in the sub-continent. Mr. Bhutto stressed the need for peaceful co-existence in southern Asia.

The following day (Thursday, 18 December), Mr. Bhutto laid a wreath at the mausoleum of the late Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike -- a former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
