    VIOLENT STORMS AND RAGING SEAS CAUSED HAVOC ALONG THE ALGERIAN COAST LAST NIGHT (MONDAY), DRIVING A FRENCH FREIGHTER ASHORE, SINKING FISHING BOATS AND DOING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO PORT INSTALLATIONS.

    THE 499-TON FRENCH FREIGHTER "TOBAZE" WAS BEACHED JUST EAST OF ALGIERS AFTER BREAKING HER MOORINGS IN THE PORT. THE 10 CREW MEMBERS WERE TAKEN OFF SAFELY AND THE VESSEL WAS NOT SERIOUSLY DAMAGED DESPITE THE BUFFETING SHE RECEIVED WHEN CAUGHT ON THE ROCKS.

    THREE FISHING BOATS WERE SUNK IN THE WESTERN PORT OF MOSTAGANEM, WHILE HEAVY SEAS DAMAGED INSTALLATIONS IN ALGIERS PORT AND SWEPT AWAY PART OF THE CETTY IN THE GAS PORT OF ARZEW. ALGIERS AIRPORT WAS CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS, AND TREES UPROOTED BY HIGH WINDS BLOCKED MANY INLAND ROADS.

    SNOW WAS ALSO A MAJOR PROBLEM LAST NIGHT, AND THE HILL RESORT OF CHREA, SOME 50 KILOMETRES (32 MILES) FROM THE CAPITAL WAS UNDER 70 CENTIMETRES (30 INCHES) OF SNOW. THERE WAS MORE SNOW IN WESTERN ALGERIA AND ROAD AND RAIL TRAFFIC WAS BADLY HIT.

    FLOODS IN EASTERN ALGERIA LAST MONTH KILLED AT LEAST 20 PEOPLE AND LEFT OVER 20,000 HOMELESS.
