Background: Marilyn Chapman, and exciting new gymnastics find from the United States, scored a surprisingly comfortable victory over Soviet Union gymnasts on the second day of the Coca Cola International held in the South East Coast resort of Brighton on Wednesday (7 December). In the Women's individual competition Soviet Union competitors failed to make the first three, and Miss Chapman, who is only 15, finished point-five five ahead of Judit Mueller of Hungary, with Kelly McCoy of the United States third. The men's individual competition, however, was completely dominated by the Soviet Union.

SYNOPSIS: The winner in the men's individual event was Nikolai Fedorenko. In the floor exercises he scored nine point three five, the same as his compatriot Vladimir Achasov, but overall he totalled 110 point nought five, just point nought five more than Achasov. In third place came another Russian, Andrei Lev, with 109 point five five. It was a fine performance by the 23-year-old Fedorenko from Minsk.

Now a 15-year-old, and this is Kelly McCoy from the United States.

Next it's the turn of overall winner Marilyn Chapman, and this vault brought her a score of nine point two.

Not such a happy landing for World Cup silver medallist Olga Koval, from the Soviet Union.

Judit Mueller from Hungary makes no mistake on the bars. Judit is a 15-year-old student from Budapest, and is the current Hungarian vault champion.

The competition attracted a lot of new and exciting names in gymnastics, and one of which to take note is Poland's Anita Jokiel. Anita is only 11, and this display on the bars shows, why she is National Junior Apparatus Champion of Poland. She goes to school in Warsaw and is trained by her father Jerzy Jokiel.

Not all gymnastics enthusiasts are youngsters, but on the beam Judit Mueller gives a performance full of youthful grace. In this year's World Cup she reached the finals of the beam exercise, finishing a very commendable sixth.

Now back to the men, and Nikolai Fedorenko in the vault ... Again it's another confident display, on the way to a well deserved victory.
