In ???igon on Friday (23 February), hundreds of People's Front supporters turned out in one of the city's parks to attend a political rally. The event was timed to remind the nation's people that the 60-day initial period following the recent ceasefire throughout Vietnam is as the half-way stage, and that elections will soon begin.
South Vietnamese president Nguyen Van Thieu arrived to speak at the rally and was welcomed by members of the country's legislature.
President Thiou told the crowd that he expected the North Vietnamese government to persuade the families of active communists in the south to travel int South Vietnam in order to swell the number of communist supporters in the coming elections.
The ceasefire agreement, signed by the United States, the North Vietnamese, the Vietcong and the South Vietnamese in Paris last month, calls for national elections in the South as soon as possible after the initial 60-day period ends.
