In East Germany, new talent has been revealed at the National Swimming Championships. On Saturday (1 July), teenager Petra Scheneider came within a split second of upsetting world record holder Ulrike Tauber in the Women's 200 metres medley.

SYNOPSIS: Fifteen year old Miss Schneider actually beast Ulrike Tauber in the morning heats, but in the first session of the finals, the Olympic champion just managed to touch ahead of the schoolgirl. In fact, there was only 0.2 of a second difference.

Some 300 swimmers from throughout East Germany were taking part in the five-day competition. And all were wondering if the women, who currently hold all but tow world records, could maintain their performance. As the event took place, there were only seven weeks to go until the 1978 World Swimming Championships in West Berlin.

Both girls qualified for the East German team for next month's world competition and Petra Schneider's two minutes 17.21 seconds made her the third fastest woman over the distance.

In the 200 metre men's breaststroke, first place went to Leipzig's Falk Becker. But his time, two minutes 23.27 seconds, was well below Brit?? David Wilkie's world record of two minutes 15.11 seconds. The East German National trainer, Rudi Schramme, said he didn't expect the men to make the same breakthrough to the very top class that the women achieved at the 1976 National Championships. But he added that the men were training more with an eye on the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
