• Short Summary

Lieutenant-General Raphael Eitan has formally taken up his command as Chief-of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces.

  • Description

Lieutenant-General Raphael Eitan has formally taken up his command as Chief-of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces. He succeeds Lieutenant-General Mordechai Gur, who had held the post for the past four years, and he now becomes the 11th head of the Jewish state's armed forces.

SYNOPSIS: General Eitan is renowned as a tough soldier. It was he who masterminded the Israeli raid on Entebbe when a hundred and 10 hostages were saved in a daring rescue at the Ugandan airport in July 1976. He formally received his new appointment from Prime Minister Begin and Defence Minister Ezer Weizman....who had demanded the replacement of General Eitan's predecessor, General Gur.

Not only a tough soldier, General Eitan is also noted as a strict disciplinarian. One of the first tasks he will have to cope with is what has been described as a drop in discipline among Israeli troops....and he's already announced that some troops will be court-martialled for alleged looting in South Lebanon. He is also known as a man who does not like the news media very much.
