Background: The American aluminium yacht Courageous will defend the America's Cup against the Australian challenger Southern Cross starting on September 10. Courageous won the last trial in the final selection series sailed off Newport Rhode Island on Monday (2 September). Her margin was I minute 47 seconds.
Intrepid, a successful defender on two previous occasions, had the better of the start. North-easterly 20 knot winds were blowing and the sea was choppy. The two yachts started at opposite ends of the line with Intrepid on the port tack. She crossed the starting line seven seconds ahead of Courageous. But the aluminium craft gradually came back and used the fickle winds to better advantage.
The win by Courageous makes her the 22nd boat to defend the Cup. Only hours after the race the America's Cup organizers announced their decision. At one stage Courageous led by three races in the elimination series. Intrepid fought back to level the series. She was heavy favourite before Monday's finel race to make the defence and one of the organizers said that if the race had been closer she would have been chosen.
