Background: England defeated Northern Ireland in a home International match at Goodison Park, Everton on Saturday (12 May).
England were ahead after nine minutes following a free kick. Martin Chivers headed the goal in. 13 minutes later, a penalty was awarded to Northern Ireland when Story brought down Morgan in England's penalty area. The kick was taken by Dave Clements who scored. At half time the score was one-all.
In the second half, England put up a weaker show. But Chivers earned reward for a lot of hard-running when he snatched the winning goal in the 81st minute.
Just before the end, England attacked again, but Chivers failed to get the ball past the Northern Ireland goalie. The final score was England 2, Northern Ireland 1.
