    Consub One, an undersea inspection vehicle, has undertaken its first investigation of a pipeline in the British North Sea oil project.

    The vehicle was controlled from the motor vessel Barracuda by a four-man British Aircraft Corporation team and it went down to a depth of 475 feet (145 meters) in three different areas.

    It transmitted back television pictures which showed the pipeline in considerable detail. These were recorded on video equipment.

    The vehicle is equipped with video recording and underwater listening devices. it was hired on this occasion, under contract to Occidental Petroleum Limited, to inspect sections of the company's new oil pipeline between the North Sea Piper field and the Orkney Islands.

    The corporation designed Consub One for the Institute of geological Science, under contract to the Department of Industry. It can operate to a depth of 2,000 feet (600 meters) and can work in currents of up to two-and-a-third knots. Its main purpose is to inspect pipelines, cables and underwater structure.

    SYNOPSIS: The british aircraft Corporation-built undersea inspection vehicle, Consub One, has undertaken its first work in the British North sea oil project. Consub One is unmanned and remotely controlled. On this occasion it was operated from the motor vessel Barracuda, by a team of Corporation experts.

    It descended to a depth of four-hundred-and-seventy-five feet, in three different areas, to inspect sections of a pipeline between the North Sea Piper Field and the Orkney Islands. The vehicle is equipped with video equipment and stereo cameras which are mounted on a pan-and-tilt head, giving all-round undersea vision. It also has underwater listening devices.

    The vehicle has been designed to inspect pipelines, cables and underwater structure.

    The picture it relays are displayed on a console aboard the support vessel and are recorded on video equipment. It is able to show the pipeline and seabed in considerable detail. Consub One's designed to operate to a depth of two thousand feet and can work in currents of up to two-and-one-third knots. It was built for the Institute of Geological Sciences under contract to the Department of Industry in the United Kingdom.
