Background: Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban strongly condemned the Egyptian sinking of the Israel destroyer "Elath" on Saturday Oct. 21 at a news conference in New York City on Sunday (October 22).

Mr. Eban called the sinking the "most flagrant and grave violation" of the Middle East cease-fire to date. The Foreign Minister said the Israeli destroyer was in international waters and not within Egyptian territorial water claimed by the United Arab Republic. He said that his government was considering what response to make and that he himself would bring the matter up at the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Eban called on Egypt to live up to the cease-fire agreement worked out at the end of the 6-day war in June. The Israeli war vessel was destroyed by three missiles fired by an Egyptian gunboat from 13 miles away.

The Israeli Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk Monday afternoon (October 23).
