Background: Thai Prime Minister Kukrit Framoj, on the first full day of his official visit to Indonesia, met with president Suharto to discuss bilateral and international issues.
At the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (12 June), Mr. Kukrit briefed the Indonesian President on Thai plans to establish relations with China early next month.
During the two hours of formal talks, the Thai Premier also discussed his government's decision to ask the United States to withdraw from its bases in Thailand.
A Thai spokesman said Indonesia, which suspended diplomatic links with ? several years ago following an abortive Communist backed coup in Jakarta, had expressed no objection to Thailands' plan to open ties with China.
Thailand and Indonesia are both members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Mr. Kukrit, who arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday (11 May) for a four-day official visit at the invitation of the Indonesian government, is scheduled to return to Bangkok of Saturday (14 June).
