  • Description

Poland's Communist Party leader, Mr. Edward Gierek, has been on an official visit to India. He arrived on Monday (24 January) for talks mainly aimed at improving economic and political relations between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Gierek began his four-day visit by attending a meeting with Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. During their talks the two leaders discussed bilateral co-operation. Two main topics of concern are the extension of markets for polish exports, and the development of Soviet bloc relations with Third world countries. A number of industrial projects are underway in Africa and the Middle East as a result of agreements between Eastern Europe and India.

India has joint commission trade with all the East European countries. East European markets have doubled in the past decade for Indian textile machinery, garage equipment and chemicals. Increasingly, long term trade plans are being worked out with the Soviet Union, as well as with Romania and Poland. Much of the Indian-Polish talks were aimed at promoting joint ventures and production co-operation in Third world countries.
