  • Description

Hong Kong's oldest charitable institution, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, celebrated its 90th anniversary Oct 6 in the usual Chinese style with a display of fireworks. Before the celebrations got underway, the island's Governor Sir Robert Black made a speech in which he praised the hospital group's fine record of service.

Started in 1890 on a Government grant and public contributions, the Tung Wah Group was able to treat about 1,500 patients. Today the chain of hospitals cope with 254,000 out-patients and about 180,000 in-patients per year. The Group headquarters in the city are housed in a skyscraper block with over 2,000 beds.

At the start of the firework display, Governor Black touched off the first cracker and the display carried on into the night.
