  • Description

Silver jubilee celebrations of the reign of King Hussein of Jordan reached a climax on Thursday when the King spelt out his hopes for the future before a crowd of thousands in Amman's Sports Village.

SYNOPSIS: Amman, Jordan's capital city, was gaily decorated for the occasion, with the Jordanian flag and portraits of the King in evidence everywhere. Thousands of the special silver jubilee green and white flags flew side by side with the Jordanian flag in the capital and elsewhere.

Palestinian refugees reached to the occasion with little visible emotion and for many, it was life as usual at their camps. But the majority of them said they supported King Hussein and were happy about the jubilee. At the Marka camp, a few miles outside Amman, Ahmad Abdullah, a refugee since 1948, said he remembered when the King acceded to the throne in 1952. He said all his children are in the Jordanian armed forces but they hope to return to Palestine some day.
