  • Description

Mexican President Luis Echeverria, starting a four day visit to Algeria on Monday (14 July), said the two countries formed a common front for achieving the demands of the third world.

At the airport, the Mexican head of state indicated that the two countries should unite to fulfill third world demands for a society based on justice.

One field where the two countries could work together is through the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and there were reports that the visiting leader would discuss the possibility of Mexico joining OPEC during discussions with Algerian President Houari Boumedienne.

Although Mexico currently exports little oil, it could well qualify for OPEC membership if its natural gas and oil exports were considered together.

President Echeverria, his wife, and a delegation of about 100 were on the second stage of their multi-nation tour which includes visits to Iran, India, Tanzania and Egypt.
