Background: Carnival is one of Brazils most popular feast. In fact, specifically at Rio, the people practically wait all year for the carnival season, when everything halts, and only carnival exists.

The actual carnival begins on Sunday, 40 days before Easter. Popular manifestations however, start at noon, the previous Saturday. Thus, many thousands of people leave their homes on Saturday, only to return 4 days later, on Wednesday at dawn. When carnival is over, and the 40 days of repention begin, to culminate with the Catholic Churches maximum fiset, Easter.

Brazil's carnival is most popular and most noticeable at Rio, where this story was shot. Main parts of the Rio carnival take place on Sunday, with the FREVO (popular northern dance procession, then on Monday all day long dancing and singing on the streets, Monday nights monumental maskenball at Rio's Opera House, and finally the huge procession of decorated floats on Tuesday night). In between, thousands and thousands of people go on dancing and singing on the streets, to the popular carnival tunes which are renewed every year.

Most of the people take some kind of costume: some elaborate, some simple ones, some funny ones. Many BLOCOS (blocks, grouos) are formed on the streets, usually starting with a handful of people, then growing until it stops traffic, proceeds for hours at the beat of rudimentar instruments, some to popular tunes, some just to the beat of samba drums. Many of these BLOCOS are formed by a number of dressed-alike carnival players. As the variation in costumes is not very great, it is an easy thing for just those dressed in that particular costume to join such a group, which becomes very colourful).

This story was shot on Dupont stock, partially 930, partially 936 and 928.
