  • Description

Speedway stars from eight countries competed at Wembley Stadium, London, on Saturday (31 August) in the European Final of the World Speedway Championships.

With eleven of the sixteen riders scheduled to go forward to the World Final in Gothenburg, Sweden in September, interest in the European final was focused not on who would go through, but rather on who would be left out.

In the end the non-appearance of the two strong Polish riders, Much and Fabiszewski weakened the field. Terry Betts of England rode with a broken shoulder and Ivan Mauger of New Zealand had an injured knee.

Nevertheless, during the heats, Mauger managed to amass the highest points total, tying with England's Peter Collins and Denmark's Ole Olsen.

So the three riders were involved in a ace-off to decide the new European Champion. This was won in convincing style by Collins, with Olsen second and Manger third.

The qualifiers who will ride in the World Final are as follows: Olsen (Denmark), Mauger (New Zealand), Betts (England), Lovaas (Norway), Gordeev (Russia), Jancarz (Poland), Jessup (England), Louis (England), Krasnov (Russia), Plech (Poland), Collins (England) and Khlynovsky (Russia).
