Background: One of the most exciting events in the motor sport calendar, the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, begins on the Le Mans road circuit, south-west of Paris, on Saturday (14 June). Cars were arriving at the scene a week before and on Tuesday (11 June) many were beginning unofficial practice.
SYNOPSIS: Last year's battle between the works teams Lancia and Porsche will be resumed, but experts are making the German Porsche team the favourites to win the 1980 Le Mans. The teams' drivers are the experienced Belgian driver Jacky Ickx and Reinhold Jost.
But whatever the outcome, Le Mans will, as always, provide 24 hours of excitement for an expected 100,000 fans.
