  • Description

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit meeting in Libreville has given firm backing to the Patriotic Front guerrillas fighting the white minority government of Prime Minister Ian Smith in Rhodesia. Before the summit closed after four days of talks on Tuesday (15 July) it adopted a Zambian resolution which urged everyone devoted to the "liberation" of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) to work within the Patriotic Front.

The resolution supporting the Patriotic Front did not specifically exclude the rival nationalist movements in Rhodesia, but member states were warned to "refrain from acts of supporting individuals, thus running the risk of creating more than one army."
SYNOPSIS: Member states were asked to give increased financial, material and political support to the guerrilla army headed by Mr Robert Mugabe and Mr Joshua Nkomo. On Monday (4 July) President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia appealed to OAU members not to become divided by quarrels.
