  • Description

ON LAKE VICTORIA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TWO FERRIES WERE COMMISSIONED FOR SERVICE BETWEEN KISUMU IN KENYA AND MWANZA IN TANZANIA. THE MOTOR VESSELS UMJOA AND UHURU OPEN A NEW RAIL WAGON FERRY SERVICE ON THE LAKE.

THE KEEL FOR THE UHURU WAS LAID IN 1964 AT YARROW'S SHIPBUILDING YARD AT GLASGOW IN SCOTLAND. WITH OTHER PARTS OF THE SHIP, THE KEEL WAS SHIPPED TO MOMBASA IN KENYA AND THEN TAKEN TO KISUMU ON THE SHORE OF LAKE VICTORIA.

THE UHURU AND THE UMJOA, WHICH FOLLOWED A YEAR LATER, WERE ASSEMBLED, FITTED OUT AND COMPLETED FOR TRIALS AT KISUMU.

THE FERRIES WERE COMMISSIONED BY THE EAST AFRICAN RAILWAYS TO PROVIDE A FAST SERVICE BETWEEN KISUMU AND MWANZA. OTHER PORTS WILL BE USED LATER WHEN LOADING TERMINALS ARE COMPLETED.

THE FERRIES WILL ENABLE LOADED REAL WAGONS TO MOVE DIRECTLY FROM THE KENYA AND UGANDA RAIL SYSTEMS TO THE CENTRAL LINE RAILWAY IN TANZANIA.
