Background: INDONESIAN AND MALAYSIAN NEGOTIATORS IN THAILAND TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AGREED ON THE WORDING OF A JOINT STATEMENT ABOUT THEIR PEACE TALKS. THE TWO COUNTRIES , ENEMIES FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS, HOPE TO RESTORE RELATIONS QUICKLY.

THE TALKS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR THREE DAYS AND PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE. HOWEVER, MR. ADAM MALIK, THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE "CONFIRMATION" OF MALAYSIA WAS STILL ON OFFICIALLY.

THE MAIN PROBLEM TO RESOLVE HAS BEEN HOW TO RECOGNISE MALAYSIAN SOVEREIGNTY AND TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY WHILE SATISFYING INDONESIAN INSISTENCE ON SELF-DETERMINATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF SABAH AND SARAWAK, THE TWO BORNEO STATES IN THE MALAYSIAN FEDERATION.

THE MALAYSIAN DELEGATION IS HEADED BY DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER TUN ABDUL RAZAK. HE HAS SAID HE IS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE OUTCOME. THE DISCUSSIONS HAVE NOT BEEN PUNCTUATED BY OUTBURSTS OR WALKOUT THREATS AS OCCURRED DURING THE THREE PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS TO SETTLE THE DISPUTE WHICH LED INDONESIA LEAVE THE UNITED NATIONS.

THE LATEST NEWS FROM BANGKOK IS THAT THE TALKS HAVE JUST ENDED AMID SHOUTS OF PLEDGES TO LIVE IN PEACE. BOTH SIDES EXCHANGED SEALED PACKAGES CONTAINING PROPOSALS TO ESTABLISH NORMAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. CHAMPAGNE WAS DRUNK IN CELEBRATION AND PRAYERS OFFERED IN THANKSGIVING.
