  • Description

HOLDING ITS FIRST DIRECT ELECTION YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) SABAH, MALAYSIA, REJECTED ITS FORMER CHIEF MINISTER AND TWO OF HIS CABINET. VOTING IS TO CHOOSE 32 MEMBERS OF THE SABAH LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY.

UNTIL NOW ASSEMBLY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY DISTRICT COUNCILS ELECTED BY LOCAL VILLAGES. YESTERDAY'S ELECTIONS CAME AS THE PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF A PLEDGE WHICH MALAYSIA GAVE TO INDONESIA WHEN IT CALLED OFF ITS THREE-YEAR CONFRONTATION OF MALAYSIA IN AUGUST 1966.

IT WAS AGREED THAT ELECTIONS SHOULD BE HELD IN THE TWO BORNEO STATES OF SABAH AND SARAWAK TO DISAPPROVE PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S CONTENTION THAT THEY WERE PRESS-GANGED INTO THE MALAYSIAN FEDERATION AS A PART OF A BRITISH PLAN TO ENCIRCLE INDONESIA.

YESTERDAY INDONESIAN OBSERVERS, LED BY COLONEL SUBANDI, WERE THERE TO WATCH THE POLLING. OBSERVERS HAS ALSO BEEN INVITED FROM THE PHILIPPINES --- BECAUSE IT STILL HAS AN UNRESOLVED TERRITORIAL CLAIM ON SABAH, DATING BACK TO THE TIME WHEN MOSLEM RULERS IN THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES EXTENDED THEIR INFLUENCE OVER NORTH BORNEO.

BECAUSE OF COMMUNICATIONS DIFFICULTIES IN THE JUNGLE TERRAIN THE ELECTION IS SPREAD OVER THREE WEEKS.
