  • Description

TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE FROM MANY PARTS OF KENYA CONVERGED ON RUSSIA ISLAND ON SUNDAY TO PAY THEIR PAST RESPECTS TO TOM MBOYA, THE KENYA MINISTER SHOT DOWN IN A NAIROBI STREET ON JULY 5. HE WAS BURIED THERE -- HIS TRIBAL BIRTHPLACE -- ON JULY 7.

THE CEREMONY BEGAN EARLY IN THE MORNING AND CONTINUED UNTIL MIDNIGHT. AMONG THE MOURNERS WERE DANCERS WEARING WAR PAINT. THERE WAS DANCING, SINGING -- AND WAILING TO WARD OFF EVIL SPIRIT.

MOURNERS WERE WELCOMED TO THE ISLAND ON LAKE VICTORIA BY MBOYA'S MOTHER AND BROTHER, ALPHONSE.

THIS WAS THE FINAL MOURNING CEREMONY FOR MBOYA, THE LUO TRIBE'S MOST FAMOUS SON IN THIS CENTURY.

SUNDAY'S CEREMONY WAS IN DIRECT CONTRAST TO THE FUNERAL PROCESSION ALMOST A MONTH EARLIER. ON THAT OCCASION THERE WERE RIOTS AND ACCIDENTS. THERE WERE THEN ALSO FEARS OF INTER-TRIBAL CONFLICT BETWEEN THE LUOS, MBOYA'S PEOPLE, AND THE KIKUYU, KENYA'S DOMINANT TRIBE, FELT BY MANY TO PLAYED A ROLE IN MBOYA'S DEATH. THIS DID NOT MATERIALISE.
