  • Description

Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, a 70-year-old former submarine commander was sworn-in on Saturday as Prime Minister of Spain -- a post which had been held by Gen. Franco for more than 30 years.

The appointment was made by Gen. Franco on Friday (8 June) after he separated the posts of chief of state and head of government that he has held jointly since coming to power in the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War.

Gen. Franco, who swore in Admiral Carrero Blanco at Saturday's ceremony filmed by Spanish Television, remains chief of state, as well as supreme commander of the Spanish Armed Forces and head of the National Movement -- the country's only political organisation.

Admiral Carrero Blanco's first task as Prime Minister was to accept the resignation of the 18 serving Cabinet ministers. He is expected to form a new government before Tuesday (12 June). The Admiral is widely regarded as a conservative who is bitterly opposed to Communism, socialism and liberalism.
