Background: The United Nations Children' Fund (UNICEF) has been shipping aid to Chad - poorest country in the world. Medical supplies and food have been unloaded at Ndjamena airport, before the boxes were put on to the back of a truck for delivery to children throughout the country. The country's economic growth rate has been in decline since 1978, and three-quarters of Ndjamena is in ruins following the civil war. The UNICEF supplies included high-protein food for distribution to health centres and hospitals, and medical supplies for vaccination for children. The United Nations has been pressing western countries for donations, and a recent conference in Geneva pledges of almost two hundred million dollars (US) from Western European governments. Chad produces only three quarters of the food it needs, and experts have estimated the suffering African state will need 50,000 tonnes of emergency food aid.
