Background: The U.S. aircraft carrier, "Forrestal", flagship of the U.S. Carrier Division Four, took on NATO and Greek Defence chiefs at Phaleron Bay, near Athens, Greece, April 5, for a first-hand inspection of the ship carrying out manoeuvres during mock nuclear bombing attacks in the Aegean next day, April 6.

"Enemy" aircraft attacked the 78,000-ton carrier some 50 miles south of the Dardsnelles, with dummy atomic bombs and rockets.

The carrier struck back - launching its supersonic fighters to force off the attack planes.

"Forestall" - and its sister ship "Saratoga" - which caught fire off Crete in January - are the backbone of NATO naval force in the Mediterranean. Its strength lies in aircraft capable of going out 1,000 miles from the carriers to cover an area of some 3 1/2M square miles.
