  • Description

New York's Governor Rockefeller, was given a noisy send-off from his supporters, July 23, when he left Idlewild airport, New York, for Chicago, where the Republican Party's Convention opens July 25.

On the eve of the Republican Convention Vice-President Nixon and Rockefeller -chief republican contestants for the Presidential Nomination - met in Rockefeller's New York home, and discussed for 8 hours the platform issues to be placed before the Republican Convention.

Platform Committee drafters have already met with National Chairman Thruston Morton to write the official statement of the aims and intentions of the Republicans. It is expected to follow the lines of the agreement reached between Nixon and Rockefeller, and adopt a strong civil rights programme.

Governor Rockefeller, is not a candidate but will accept a Convention draft Presidential nomination, shook the political firmament here recently when he had a breakfast meeting with President Eisenhower and attacked the Republican "lack of readiness to meet emergencies". At that time, he challenged Vice President Nixon, much-favoured candidate for nomination for the Presidential spot, to declare his aims and intentions.

Rockefeller has announced again that he will not accept any Vice-Presidential nomination.
