  • Description

Ove Fundin of Sweden tonight (Saturday) won the world speedway championship at Wembley Stadium in London - the fifth time he's taken the title.

Fundin (number 7) needed a run-off against fellow Swede Bengt Jansson (number 5) before taking the title. They had each scored 14 points in five races. But there was no doubt about the final outcome as 70,000 spectators acclaimed the Swedish star as he hurtled round the last bend three lengths in front of Jansson.

Fundin's only defeat in the evening's racing came in heat 13, when the Soviet champion and sportsmaster Igor Plechanov (number 14) showed him a clean back wheel in a fast run race. The other riders in the thirteenth heat were Antoni Wornya (number 12) and Andrzej Wyglenda (number 1), both from Poland.

But it was only a minor setback for Fundin, who ended the day happily accepting the victor's medal and a cheque for GBP1,000. In third place after Jansson was New Zealander Ivan Mauger with 13 points, and fourth was Plechanov with 12.
