  • Description

Fourteen thousand police and troops continued their search in Montevideo on Tuesday (18 August) for the Brazilian and United States diplomats kidnapped by Uruguayan urban guerrillas.

On the same day, suspects, including catholic priests, believed to have been in touch with the kidnappers, were charged in court.

The two diplomats, American Claud Fly and Aloysio Dias Gomide from Brazil, were last heard from when they wrote to their wives more than a week ago. The guerrillas are demanding the release of 150 political prisoners in exchange for the diplomats.

Mrs. Maria Gomide, wife of the kidnapped Brazilian, said on Tuesday "I still have faith and I am hoping for the return safe and sound."
Already one American diplomat, Daniel Mitrione, has been murdered by the guerrillas because of the Uruguayan President's refusal to release the political prisoners. A memorial service for Mr. Mitrione was held at a church in Montevideo on Tuesday. Among those at the service was the United States Ambassador, Charles Adair.

So far police have arrested more than 60 suspects but the whereabouts of the missing diplomats remains a mystery.
