  • Description

ALL THE 98 CARS IN THE LONDON TO SYDNEY MARATHON CAR RALLY WERE STILL IN THE RUNNING TODAY (MONDAY) AFTER COMPLETING THE FIRST LEG ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL TO PARIS. THE DRIVERS LEFT LONDON YESTERDAY AND ARRIVED AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT IN PARIS AT DAWN TODAY AFTER CROSSING THE CHANNEL FROM DOVER TO PARIS.

FOG DRIFTING ACROSS NORTHERN FRENCH ROADS DURING THE NIGHT DELAYED SOME CARS. ABUT 2,000 PEOPLE BRAVED THE COLD TO WELCOME THE DRIVERS AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT. THEN THE DRIVERS HEADED SOUTH ON THE NEXT STAGE OF MORE THAN 10 DAYS OF ALMOST CONTINUOUS DRIVING ACROSS EUROPE AND THE MIDDLE EAST TO BOMBAY. THE FIRST CAR IS EXPECTED TO REACH TO TURIN IN ITALY THIS AFTERNOON, AFTER DRIVING OVER THE ALPS. THE DRIVING BETWEEN LONDON AND BOMBAY ALLOWS FOR ONLY ABOUT SIX HOURS REST. THE RACE WILL COVER 10,000 MILES (16,000 KILOMETRES) FROM LONDON TO SYDNEY WITH A SEA CROSSING LASTING NINE DAYS BETWEEN BOMBAY AND FREMANTLE, AUSTRALIA.

THE RACE IS THE LONGEST AND THE MOST GRUELLING OF THE CENTURY. WHEN THE CARS LEFT LONDON, OFFICIALS PREDICTED THAT 75 PER CENT WOULD DROP OUT OF THE EVENT WHICH IS SPONSORED BY A BRITISH AND AN AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER. THE RACE CARRIERS ABOUT 20,000 POUNDS STERLING WORTH OF PRIZE MONEY.

AMONG THE CARS TAKING PART IN THE RACE IS A 38-YEAR-OLD BENTLEY. ITS OWNER, MR KEITH SCHELLENBERG, THINKS THAT HIS CAR IS IDEAL FOR THE RACE.
