THE COUNCIL WILL CONTINUE WITH ITS EFFORTS TO FIND A SUITABLE FORMULA FOR PEACEKEEPING FORCE FOR THE ISLAND. THE POINT AT DISPUTE AT THE MOMENT IS THE CYPRUS DEMAND FOR TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY AND A FIRM ASSURANCE FROM THE COUNCIL THAT THE UNITED NATIONS WILL PREVENT ANY INVASIONS OF THE ISLAND.

IN THE MEANTIME, BRITISH TROOPS IN NICOSIA AVERTED A THREATENED CLASH E BETWEEN GREEKS AND TURKS ON THE "GREEN LINE" WHICH DIVIDES THE CYPRIOT CAPITAL IN TWO.

BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF BRITISH TROOPS, TURKISH POLICE HAD ARRESTED ONE GREEK SHOP OWNER WHO PROTESTED AGAINST DAMAGE DONE TO HIS SHOP. HE WAS LATER RELEASED AFTER BRITISH TROOPS PERSUADED THE TURKS TO LET THE MAN GO FREE.
