    HUNDREDS OF JOURNALISTS, SOME OF THEM MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, HELD A MASS MEETING TODAY TO PASS A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A REVIEW OF THE SENTENCES PASSED ON TWO REPORTERS JAILED FOR REFUSING TO REVEAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION TO A GOVERNMENT TRIBUNAL.

    ABOUT 400 JOURNALISTS PASSED THIS RESOLUTION UNANIMOUSLY: "THIS RALLY OF LONDON JOURNALISTS CALLS ON THE HOME SECRETARY IMMEDIATELY TO REVIEW AND REMIT THE SENTENCES IMPOSED ON THEIR COLLEAGUES REGINALD FOSTER AND BRENDAN MULHOLLAND, NOW IMPRISONED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF OBEYING THE DICTATES OF THEIR CONSCIENCE AND THE PROFESSIONAL CODE OF JOURNALISTS THROUGHOUT THE DEMOCRATIC WORLD".

    REGINALD FOSTER, 58, AND BRENDAN MULHOLLAND, 29, REFUSED TO REVEAL TO THE TRIBUNAL THE SOURCES OF THEIR STORIES THEIR NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED ABOUT BRITISH ADMIRALTY CLERK WILLIAM VASSELL, CONVICTED OF SPYING.

    THEY WERE JAILED LAST WEEK FOR THREE AND SIX MONTHS RESPECTIVELY FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT.

    THE MEETING WAS CALLED BY THE CENTRAL LONDON BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF WHICH THE JAILED MEN ARE MEMBERS.
