  • Description

A NEW ZEALAND GIRL, JAKI PROCTOR FROM AUCKLAND HAS AN UNUSUAL HOBBY - SHE MAKES RUBBINGS OF COAL-HOLE COVERS.

MANY OF THE HOUSES BUILT IN LONDON DURING THE EIGHTEENTH AND NINETEENTH CENTURY HAD COAL CELLARS BUILT UNDER THE PAVEMENTS AT THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE - METAL COVERS WERE PLACED OVER THE CHUTES LEADING DOWN INTO THE CELLARS, MANY OF THEM WITH DIFFERENT PATTERNS.

JAKI PROCTOR MAKES COPIES OF THE PATTERS BY PUTTING PAPER ON TOP OF THE COVER, THEN RUBBING THE PAPER WITH CHARCOAL, THE EMBOSSED PATTERN ON THE COAL-HOLE COVER IS ACCURATELY REPRODUCED.

TWENTY-TWO YEAR OLD JAKI HOPES TO SELL SOME OF THE RUBBINGS THAT SHE'S MADE AND THERE'S NO SHORTAGE OF WORK - JAKI SAYS THERE ARE MORE COAL-HOLE COVERS IN LONDON THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.
