  • Description

BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS TODAY (MONDAY) AGAIN CAUSED A POSTPONEMENT OF THE FIRST DAY'S COMPETITIONS IN THE 1965 WORLD GLIDER CHAMPIONSHIPS BEING HELD AT SOUTH CERNEY IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, WHO ARRIVED BACK IN BRITAIN FROM THE ROYAL TOUR OF WEST GERMANY YESTERDAY, VISITED THE AIRFIELD TODAY AND MET MANY OF THE TEAMS TAKING PART IN THE CONTEST.

EIGHTY-SIX PILOTS FROM 28 COUNTRIES ARE TALKING PART IN THE CONTEST, WHICH OPENED ON SATURDAY. COMPETITIVE FLYING WAS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON SUNDAY, BUT A BLANKET OF CLOUD CAUSED THE DAY'S EVENTS TO BE POSTPONED. TODAY COMPETITORS PREPARED FOR TAKE-OFF IN A 129-KILOMETRE (80 MILES) RACE OVER A ZIG-ZAG COURSE FOR OPEN AND STANDARD-CLASS PILOTS, BUT THE WEATHER CLEARED TOO LATE FOR THE EVENT TO BEGIN.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, WHO ARRIVED AT THE CONTROLS OF HIS SCARLET HELICOPTER, CHATTED WITH SOME OF THE NATIONAL TEAMS AND INSPECTED THEIR AIRCRAFT.

THE DUKE WAS INTRODUCED TO HEINZ HUTH, OF WEST GERMANY, WHO AT 57 IS THE OLDEST COMPETING PILOT AND THE WORLD CHAMPION IN THE STANDARD CLASS. PRINCE PHILIP WISHED HIM LUCK IN HIS BID TO BE THE FIRST PILOT EVER TO WIN A WORLD GLIDING TITLE THREE TIMES RUNNING.

THE DUKE ALSO CHATTED WITH THE EIGHT SOVIET PILOTS AND ASKED THEM ABOUT THEIR GLIDERS, WHICH ARE SMALLER THAN THEIR RIVAL MODELS.
