The close family and former close associates of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana, paid tribute at his grave on the first anniversary of his death on Friday (27 April).
Doctor Nkrumah's body is interred at Nkroful in western Ghana. His death occurred while he was in Rumania. Tributes both public and private were many as the nation remembered their former leader on the anniversary of his death.
He will long be remembered as the man who led Ghana to independence. It was under his rule that roads, bridges, schools and universities were built together with new townships and ports.
Recalling his achievements and failures, the "Ghanian Times" save ??? "in pursuing his political objectives, he made enemies and causal suffering and hardships. It is, however, important to draw a line between hardships and suffering that befell those who by their own lawlessness and bloody deeds instigated by their own selfish and vested interests invited these on themselves and those who became undeserving victims of Nkrumah's political machinery".
The late President's sons and daughters laid wreaths on their father's grave at a solemn commemoration ceremony. Also there were several former Ministers of the late President's government.

Dr. Nkrumah, who died while on a visit to Rumania, will be remembered as the man who led his country to independence. Recalling the late President's failures as well as his achievements, the "Ghanaian Times" said: "In pursuing his political objectives, he made enemies and caused suffering and hardships". But the paper also points out he was responsible for the building of new roads, bridges, schools and universities. At his graveside were those who remembered him only with affection.
Former Ministers in the Nkrumah administration attended the ceremony of remembrance. The occasion passed off peacefully.
