  • Description

Rolling into the East-West border station at Helmstedt on February 12th, this special train carried a party of German scientists who had been deported to Russia at the end of World War II.

Looking fit and well despite their long stay in Siberia, the scientists were accompanied by no less than 21 relations, some of whom had been born in far off Siberia.

Hundreds of local people had gathered at the station to welcome the twelve men and their families back to West Germany.

Leaning out of the windows of the train, the returning scientists wore a wide selection of clothes and Herr Goldberg wore a typical Russian hat.

In addition to the usual luggage, the families also brought a dog and a cat back with them to join them in their new life in the west.
