  • Description

THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS, UNICEF, AND OTHER RELIEF ORGANISATIONS ARE WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK TO CARE FOR THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF STARVING AND HOMELESS CREATED BY THE WAR BETWEEN NIGERIA AND BIAFRA. ON SAO TOME A HOSPITAL FOR BIAFRAN REFUGEE CHILDREN HAS BEEN SET UP BY CARITAS, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIEF GROUP. IT IS STAFFED BY UNPAID NUNS OF THE HOLY ROSARY ORDER.

SAO TOME IS ONE OF THE TWO OFFSHORE ISLANDS THAT HAVE BEEN USED AS BASES FOR RELIEF FLIGHTS TO BIAFRA.

THIS HOSPITAL HAS BEEN SET UP ON A COCOA PLANTATION, QUINTA S. ANTONIO, WHICH CARITAS HAS HIRED FROM THE OWNER. THE NURSES BELONG TO THE HOLY ROSARY TEACHING ORDER AND THEY ARE EXPERIENCED AND DEVOTED NURSES AND TEACHERS.

THE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN FLOWN OUT TO THE ISLAND FROM BIAFRA AS THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN TROOPS CLOSE IN, AND THE NUNS AND DOCTORS AT THE HOSPITAL HAVE TO TREAT THEM FOR MALNUTRITION AND THE VARIOUS DISEASES STARVATION HAS INDUCED.

THE CHILDREN ARE SETTLING DOWN WELL IN THEIR NEW SURROUNDINGS, AND ONE OF THE LESSONS THE NUNS ARE TEACHING THEM IS SIMPLY HOW TO PLAY AGAIN.

LAST WEEK INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS OFFICIALS SAID THAT THEIR ORGANISATION HAD FLOWN A TOTAL OF 905 TONS OF RELIEF SUPPLIES IN THEIR THREE WEEKS OF NIGHTLY MERCY FLIGHTS TO BIAFRA, BUT THAT A FAR LARGER AMOUNT OF SUPPLIES WAS NECESSARY TO ALLEVIATE THE PLIGHT OF THE REFUGEES RED CROSS SOURCES ALSO ESTIMATE THAT THERE ARE 250,000 REGISTERED REFUGEES AND THAT UP TO 200,000 ARE STILL HIDING IN THE BUSH.
