  • Description

POLICE IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) SHOWED NEWSMEN A LARGE ARMS CACHE WHICH THEY SAID WAS UNCOVERED LAST MONDAY IN A PRIVATE HOUSE ABOUT ONE MILE (1.5 KMS) FROM THE PALACE OF PRESIDENT MAKARIOS. THE ARMS DISPLAYED INCLUDED 60 MACHINE GUNS AND THREE BAZOOKAS.

OFFICIAL SOURCES IN NICOSIA HAVE DISCOUNTED THEORIES THAT THE ARMS WERE FOR A POSSIBLE COUP AGAINST PRESIDENT MAKARIOS. A MORE POPULAR VIEW WAS THAT THEY WERE STORED AFTER ORGANISED MILITARY FORCES TOOK OVER FROM VOLUNTEERS IN THE FIGHTING BETWEEN GREEK CYPRIOTS AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN 1964.

MANY OF THE WEAPONS WERE USELESS AND MUCH OF THE AMMUNITION APPEARED TO HAVE DETERIORATED.

THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS YESTERDAY APPROVED A BILL INCREASING THE MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF FIREARMS FROM SEVEN TO TEN YEARS AND FOR CARRYING WEAPONS ILLEGALLY FROM TEN TO FIFTEEN YEARS.
