  • Description

POMPIDOU SUPPORTERS & PRESS: POMPIDOU ARRIVING & SPEAKING: POHER SURROUNDED BY PRESS ANSWERING QUESTIONS. (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: POMPIDOU: IN SPITE OF CERTAIN STATEMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE, DAR??? I HOPE THAT M. POHER - WHO DECLARED, PLACED, HIS CANDIDACY UNDER THE SIGN OF UNITY - MIGHT REALIZE HOW MUCH HIS CONCESSION BEFORE THE SECOND ROUND WOULD ALLOW THE PURSUIT OF THE POLICY THAT I HAVE WIDELY AND RESOLUTELY ANNOUNCED AND DEFINED: THAT IS TO SAY, THE POLICY OF OPENING-OUT, OF RECONCILIATION FOR ALL THE FRENCH PEOPLE AND THE FAITHFULNESS TO THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE FIFTH REPUBLIC."

POHER: "AND I WOULD ANSWER, IN ALL HONESTY, THAT M. DUCLOS HAS MADE A VERY GOOD SCORE, OWED UNDOUBTEDLY TO THE BEAUTIFUL ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN HE HAS WAGED. ITS REASSURANCE, ENTIRELY IN HIS OWN STYLE, GAINED HIM THIS RESULT. M. DUCLOS IS TRULY A GRAND OLD MAN WHO GIVES THE IMPRESSION, A CERTAIN - HOW SHALL I SAY - ATTITUDE OF REASSURANCE, CONFIDENCE. AND I KNOW HIM WELL - HE IS A SENATOR, AND ALL THE SENATORS ALWAYS GIVE THIS IMPRESSION ..... (GENERAL CROWD SOUND) YES, IF M. POMPIDOU WINS, IT WILL ALSO BE WITH THE COMMUNIST VOTES. FOR THE MOMENT HE HAS 44% OF THE SUFFRAGE - HE WHO IS ELECTED WILL ALSO HAVE THE COMMUNIST VOTE - ONE OR THE OTHER. SO, WHAT DOES IT MEAN, ALL THAT? YOU KNOW, THE COMMUNIST VOTES ARE GOOD WHEN THEY GIVE YOU ADVANTAGE, AND THEY ARE BAD WHEN THEY GIVE THE OTHER THE ADVANTAGE - THIS ISN'T SERIOUS. FOR ME THEY ARE FRENCH VOTES."

INTERVIEWER: ........ WOULD LIKE TO ASK IF INTEND TO KEEP THE INTERIM OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC?

POHER: SINCE I CANNOT LEAVE IT - IT IS ATTACHED TO ME - I CAN'T DO ANYTHING. THIS CONSTITUTION IS QUITE IMPRECISE, THE JURISTS TELL ME THAT I CANNOT LEAVE, SO I MUST STAY. ANYHOW, THERE IS NOTHING MORE THAN ONE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS FRIDAY OF NEXT WEEK, SO I CAN TAKE IT EASY.

INTERVIEWER: HAVE YOU EVER DREAMED OF RETIRING?

POHER: AH, NEVER! BECAUSE I WOULD NOT HAVE STARTED THE CAMPAIGN - BUT FROM THE MOMENT I DID START, I HAD DEFINITE REASON FOR STARTING. AND WHEN I START, I CONTINUE. ME, I AM A BRETON, I DECIDED TO FIGHT TO THE END. SO ......

INTERVIEWER: BUT, M. LE PRESIDENT, YOU DID HESITATE IN THE BEGINNING AND ONE WAITED FOR YOUR ......

POHER: AND IT'S JUST BECAUSE I HESITATED AT THE BEGINNING THAT NOW I AM DETERMINED. THAT'S THE BRETONS!"

Background: YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) EVENING, AS THE RESULTS OF THE DAY'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS CONFIRMED THAT MR. GEORGES POMPIDOU HAD ACQUIRED MORE THAN 40% OF THE VOTES - BUT WOULD APPARENTLY NOT BE REACHING THE REQUIRED 50% THAT WOULD WIN HIM THE ELECTIONS OUTRIGHT ON THE FIRST ROUND - HE SPOKE TO THE PRESS SUGGESTING THAT HIS CHIEF RIVAL, M. ALAIN POHER, SHOULD CONCEDE DEFEAT. M. POHER, HOWEVER, CONFIDENT ON BEING ABLE TO GAIN THE PRESIDENCY ON THE SECOND ROUND - BY ADDING THE VOTES OF THE LEFT TO HIS OWN FIRST-ROUND 23% - DECLARED THAT HE WOULD FIGHT TO THE END.

THE FINAL RESULTS TODAY ARE : GAULLIST CANDIDATE POMPIDOU, 44.14%; POHER 23.38%; COMMUNIST JACQUES DUCLOS, 21.4%; SOCIALIST GASTON DEFERRE, 5.06%. THE MAJOR UPSET OF THE ELECTION; EXTREME SOCIALIST MICHEL ROCARD, 3.65%. INDEPENDENT LOUIS DUCATEL, 1.28%; AND TROTSKYIST ALAIN KRIVINE, 1.06%. THE LAST THREE LOST THEIR 1,000-FRANC (850-POUND STERLING) DEPOSITS. THE SECOND ROUND OF THE ELECTIONS TO BE RUN OFF BETWEEN THE TWO LEADING CANDIDATES, WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 15TH - AND THE WAY THE OTHER 32% OF THE VOTERS GOES WILL DECIDE THE WINNER. THIS MORNING, COMMUNIST PARTY SOURCES HAVE SAID THAT A MEETING WILL BE HELD TO DECIDE HOW THEIR 4,787,000 VOTERS SHOULD GO - AND THERE IS A STRONG INDICATION THAT THEY MAY BE INSTRUCTED TO ABSTAIN. IF THIS DOES HAPPEN, M. POMPIDOU IS ALMOST CERTAINLY THE WINNER. AT LAST NIGHT'S PRESS CONFERENCE, M. POMPIDOU SAID:
LATER, AFTER REFUSING TO ACCEPT M. POMPIDOU'S SUGGESTION, M. POHER OPTIMISTICALLY FACED THE PRESS:
