    YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) EVENING, AS THE RESULTS OF THE DAY'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS CONFIRMED THAT MR. GEORGES POMPIDOU HAD ACQUIRED MORE THAN 40% OF THE VOTES - BUT WOULD APPARENTLY NOT BE REACHING THE REQUIRED 50% THAT WOULD WIN HIM THE ELECTIONS OUTRIGHT ON THE FIRST ROUND - HE SPOKE TO THE PRESS SUGGESTING THAT HIS CHIEF RIVAL, M. ALAIN POHER, SHOULD CONCEDE DEFEAT. M. POHER, HOWEVER, CONFIDENT ON BEING ABLE TO GAIN THE PRESIDENCY ON THE SECOND ROUND - BY ADDING THE VOTES OF THE LEFT TO HIS OWN FIRST-ROUND 23% - DECLARED THAT HE WOULD FIGHT TO THE END.

    THE FINAL RESULTS TODAY ARE : GAULLIST CANDIDATE POMPIDOU, 44.14%; POHER 23.38%; COMMUNIST JACQUES DUCLOS, 21.4%; SOCIALIST GASTON DEFERRE, 5.06%. THE MAJOR UPSET OF THE ELECTION; EXTREME SOCIALIST MICHEL ROCARD, 3.65%. INDEPENDENT LOUIS DUCATEL, 1.28%; AND TROTSKYIST ALAIN KRIVINE, 1.06%. THE LAST THREE LOST THEIR 1,000-FRANC (850-POUND STERLING) DEPOSITS. THE SECOND ROUND OF THE ELECTIONS TO BE RUN OFF BETWEEN THE TWO LEADING CANDIDATES, WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 15TH - AND THE WAY THE OTHER 32% OF THE VOTERS GOES WILL DECIDE THE WINNER. THIS MORNING, COMMUNIST PARTY SOURCES HAVE SAID THAT A MEETING WILL BE HELD TO DECIDE HOW THEIR 4,787,000 VOTERS SHOULD GO - AND THERE IS A STRONG INDICATION THAT THEY MAY BE INSTRUCTED TO ABSTAIN. IF THIS DOES HAPPEN, M. POMPIDOU IS ALMOST CERTAINLY THE WINNER. AT LAST NIGHT'S PRESS CONFERENCE, M. POMPIDOU SAID:
